Special Appeal Through the Years

During the live auction, Capitol Hill has a special appeal portion of the evening. At this time, the families raise their paddles to help contribute to a fund dedicated to one idea or item. Each year has added incredible things to our school.

The 2019 Special Appeal Item will be adding flexible seating to each classroom. Our students will use research based alternative seating (many ideas shown here
https://www.prodigygame.com/blog/flexible-seating-classroom-ideas/) to help improve focus, community building, sensory input and so much more.

2018: School of Rock: Music
Capitol Hill does not have a music teacher but we have many musical students and families. Our Special Appeal funds will bring in Michael Allen Harrison, a musical artist in residence. He will work with each classroom of students to develop a song about what they are learning in their world (the solar system, chicks hatching, friendship and more!). He will then help them develop lyrics, music and learn performance skills. At the end of his time with our children, he will help put on a performance for the community (more information to come). We are so thankful for the generosity of our parents and we hope to have Michael Allen Harrison for many years to come.

2017: Tailgating for Tomorrow: Gym and Playground Enhancements
We have an amazing PE program at our school and a huge space for our kids to play each day. With our Special Appeal funds, we will be able to buy new playground equipment, add a rock climbing wall to the gym and add a larger variety of gym and playground equipment.

2016: Rewind the ‘80’s Night: Weird Science and OMSI
This year’s special appeal for the Rewind 80s Auction is Weird Science, an OMSI partnership. As an organization the PTA has focused in previous years on bringing technology to the classroom and creating a courtyard garden.  Both of these appeals are related to providing additional STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics- also known as STEAM) enrichment for our students.  This year,
we are shifting our focus to the “S” of STEM and are going to create a partnership with OMSI to bring science enrichment for every child at Capitol Hill.

2015: Courtyard Renovation and Outdoor Classroom Project
The courtyard at Capitol Hill School is in need of a serious makeover with major drainage, weed, and layout issues that limit the use of this space for education and recreation. The value of the courtyard for education and recreation could be increased dramatically by fixing the drainage, weed, and layout issues of the space. Imagine a functional and aesthetic outdoor classroom that demonstrates storm
water management and attracts pollinators and other wildlife. Kids grow vegetables in raised beds for the school lunch program and for donation to local food pantries. As the geographic center of the school, the courtyard serves as a place that connects kids with nature and builds community. The on-going maintenance of the space is built into the upfront-design so that there is minimal regular maintenance
needed to keep the space looking good. Kids get learning opportunities focused on benchmarks connected to courtyard themes:
1) Vegetables and nutrition
2) Stormwater management
3) Beneficial insects and pollinators
